How does Ayurveda view Hyperacidity or Amlapitta ?

Hyperacidity or amlapitta is a result of indigestion. Diluted acids in large volumes are generated that do not have capacity to cause digestion. Symptoms like burning in the stomach, burning in the throat and chest, uneasiness, belching, gastric reflux, vomiting, headaches often coupled with fever nausea are commonly seen. Mouth has sour or bitter taste.

Acidity is a result of accumulated indigestion. Accumulated effect of such a response leads to acidity symptoms, where any food – spicy, sweet, salty leads to same reaction.

Grazing, erratic food timings, long hours of starvation, late nights also has adverse impact on digestive system.Stress, anger also causes a surge of acidity.

The immediate relief in very severe Hyperacidity is to induce vomiting as stated in the texts (vaman). This clears the accumulated volumes of undigested food. The remedial measures primarily consists of food constraints, home remedies and medicines as per doctor’s advice.

Added use of ghee in the food and regular exercise and Pranayam help alleviate the problem. Pomegranates, Amla, also helps to reduce Amlapitta.

Shredded ginger +lemon juice + salt + sugar –  Make a paste and have at 1ot 2 hour intervals till you see a drop in the symptoms. If Amlapitta is overlooked or not addressed properly, it may lead to major illnesses in the later years.

* This is the Doctor’s interpretation of the Ayurvedic Texts based on his experience of over 32 years, and that there can be further discussion on the issue.
