Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance has become more prevalent in recent times especially in India. Milk and the lactose presence in milk are difficult for some people to digest, leading to a set of symptoms called Lactose Intolerance.

The commonest symptoms of Lactose Intolerance are :
Gases, Bloating of Stomach Diarrhea, Stomach Cramps, Abdominal Pain

The intensity of the symptoms varies from person to person and also depends on the amount of intake of milk or milk products. They last till the milk stays in the system and recedes thereafter.

Lactose Intolerance is seen more often in infants and children and may recede as they grow in age. However, some people continue to show symptoms later in life. Some also find intolerance coming late in life, while digesting it well during younger age.

Ayurveda Outlook

Children have a weak agni that finds difficulty in digesting milk. Many infants show intolerance to their mother’s milk. This is a sign that the milk is too guru or complex for the baby. It also means that the mother should follow a certain dietary discipline so that her milk becomes easier for the infant to assimilate.

Under such circumstances, if the infant is only on the mother’s milk, treatment needs to be given only to the mother and the baby gets cured.

In adults, if intolerance shows later then, the pitta in the digestive tract is a probable cause. Pitta needs to be reduced, agni increased so that milk could be easily assimilated.
